OpenBridge
Design Guidelines

Getting started with app design

The OpenBridge application design guideline, lays out how to design applications with effective and consistent user interfaces that can be installed seamlessly in all OpenBridge compatible bridge systems. The guideline can be used to develop user interface design for standalone applications or user interfaces for applications that can share screens with multiple other applications.

We have divided the design guideline into five main sections. Layout, style and components are the three main elements that are used to design applications. In addition we have included a section that position OpenBridge in relation to existing maritime regulations and guidelines. finally, we have added a section on design cases which show examples of applications that have been designed using the OpenBridge guideline.

Figure 1. The design guideline have three main components (style, Layout and Components), that guide design of applications. The application cases and regulation sections, offer support in how to use the main guide line components.

Regulation
We describe how the design guideline is positioned according to current maritime regulation and guidelines. We show which documents we have reviewed and how we use them in our work.

Regulation

Layout
We describe how to structure OpenBridge user interfaces. This include mandatory generic applications structure, scaling principles and basic application navigation structure.

Layout

Style
We describe the basic visual elements that make up an OpenBridge user interface. This include howto use typography, the OpenBridge color schemes and how the basic shapes and states work in the system.

Style

Components
We describe the basic and nested components that can be used to construct user interfaces. These components are constructed according to the style category above and include a large number of reusable components.

Components

Cases
We describe how to use layout, style and components to construct complete user interfaces. We present a series of user interface designs that can be used as blueprint in construction of new user interfaces. These cases is a good starting point for understanding the OpenBridge design guideline.
